Liability Insurance Coverage for Knights of Columbus Sub-ordinate Councils

The need to have liability insurance coverage in place for councils in Ontario has always been strongly recommended by OntarioState Council and it is now a condition for councils to operate in a parish facility. The cost to acquire such coverage by our councils escalated dramatically after the tragedy of September 11.

Roman Catholic parishes of Ontario have liability insurance coverage provided through liability insurance agreements between the Ontario Conference of Catholic Bishops (O.C.C.B.) or the Archdiocese of Toronto and two insurance facilitators.

Until now, it was unclear whether this coverage extended to parish based councils of the Knights of Columbus in Ontario. Meetings and discussions with the O.C.C.B., the Archdiocese of Toronto and the insurance facilitators have resulted in a clarification of that matter which is described in the publication; Knights of Columbus Ontario State Council Liability Insurance Policy and Procedures for Subordinate Councils. This document outlines the definitions and coverages offered for “Parish based” and “Hall” councils. It will be noted that certain events described as Special Events are not covered under the omnibus programme and the methods of acquiring such coverage through other insurance facilitators is described. The application form for the coverage offered by Pearson- Dunn can be reached by clicking on Special Event Insurance Application. There will be a premium charged for this coverage but in most cases it will be easily absorbed in the ticket price for the event.

Please read the policy and procedures carefully and if there are any question contact the State Office or the insurance facilitator providing coverage for your council.

The subject of liability insurance coverage will be continually monitored and any changes will communicated as soon as they become available.

Assurance de responsabilité civile pour les conseils ubordonnés des Chevaliers de Colomb 

Le conseil d’État de l’Ontario recommande fortement depuis longtemps que ses conseils subordonnés souscrivent une police d’assurance de responsabilité civile. Ceci est maintenant une exigence pour les conseils de paroisse, c’est-à-dire ceux qui fonctionnent dans les installations paroissiales. Le coût d’une telle assurance est monté en flèche depuis la tragédie du onze septembre.

À la suite d’ententes entre la Conférence des évêques catholiques de l’Ontario (CÉCO) ou de l’archidiocèse de Toronto, et deux courtiers d’assurances, les paroisses catholiques romaines de l’Ontario sont couvertes par une police d’assurance de responsabilité civile.

Jusqu’à maintenant, nous n’étions pas certains si cette couverture s’appliquait aux conseils de paroisse des Chevaliers de Colomb de l’Ontario. Après de multiples rencontres et discussions avec la CÉCO, l’archidiocèse de Toronto et les courtiers d’assurances, nous avons obtenu les clarifications qui s’imposaient; elles sont décrites dans le document : Politique et procédures pour l’assurance de responsabilité civile des conseils subordonnés en Ontario. Ce document précise les définitions et le genre de couverture offert aux conseils “de paroisse” et aux conseils “de salle”. Il faut bien noter que certaines activités, dites “activités spéciales”, ne sont pas couvertes par ce régime d’assurance pour compte. La façon de souscrire ailleurs une assurance pour ces activités spéciales est aussi décrite dans ce document. On peut obtenir le formulaire de demande pour faire une proposition d’assurance offerte par Pearson-Dunn à cet effet en cliquant sur “Demande d’assurance pour les activités spéciales”. Il faut payer des primes pour cette assurance, mais dans la plupart des cas, cette prime est facilement absorbée dans le prix des billets d’admission.
