Tips on how to plan your Council bulletin

  • Write out a list

The first step to creating bulletin topics is to make a list of potential ideas. Whether you prefer a pencil and notebook or your trusty laptop, find yourself a nice quiet area where you will not be disturbed. Once you are in that comfort place, put your thinking cap on and storm up as many ideas as your brain will allow. Write out everything that comes to mind and let it flow to the point where nothing seems impossible. Even if some of your ideas sound a little crazy, they could put you on the road to more creative and logical concepts.

  • Narrow down your list

After writing down some ideas, take a look at the list and narrow it down by deciding which would make the best topics to include in your bulletin. When narrowing down the bulletin topics on your list, try to pick something you would feel comfortable about in future issues. If you come up with a good idea, your readers may request it on a regular basis.

  • Choose the best newsletter topic

Once you have narrowed down your list to a few good choices, select the one that makes the best topic for your bulletin. The key to good bulletin topics is intriguing information. If your selection can drive home the point to the reader, you can hook them in and have them anticipating your next issue.

  • Use pictures and stories from your Council events

After an event is completed, have your Chairman do a write up for your bulletin.  If pictures have been taken, include them in your publication.  Council members should be able to read about the events happening in your Council, this will encourage them to get involved, and create opportunities for recruitment.

  • Ensure all Council members receive your bulletin

Ensure that your Council bulletin is sent to all members.  Use e-mail where possible, and send or deliver hard copies where required.  If you have a website, post the bulletin to your Council website and direct members to go to the site to view/download the bulletin.
