Canada Day ParadeBrothers,

Council 3296 Soccer Penalty Kick winners are selected to carry the Knights Flag at the Scarborough Canada Parade on July 1st.

This year we had a great showing with 108 students participating in the soccer competition.  Another 30 students participated, but were too young for us to record the results.

The Principal Mayer and winning students were very proud with the honor and look forward to the special day when they can march in the parade. Youth Director Brother Bruce Correa was approached to find youth to fill this important spot. Correa believes there are many benefits bringing the Youth and Knights together.

Brother Mark D’Silva and Brother Jaime Libaque provided the opportunity and should be congradulated for promoting Youth during Canada Day.

Participating Councils / Assemblies / Squire Circles for the Scarborough Canada Day event are:

Our first annual March Break Free Skate was a huge success. Council 3296 is investigating if a Summer Swim would be as successful!

Regarding the free skate we had children attend from many different schools and our Council showed strong support with many  Knights attending.  A special thanks goes out to our Grand Knight for supporting this event from the conception.

District Deputy Reyes made a special visit and helped collect food for Saint Vincent De Paul.  Dan McNeil  was very helpful in organizing  this event and our sponsor Kirby Newman provided the refreshments and cookies. This event was marketed at several schools and parishes and many thanks goes out to the Principals and Priests for their support.

More information regarding the Summer Swim will be released as details are finalized.

Knights celerbrate Feast of St.Barnabus on June 11th 2009Knights celerbrate Feast of St.Barnabus on June 11th 2009.

Rev. Edwin Mario Gonsalves was very pleased with the support of the Knights of Columbus. Fr. James J. Farrell, SJ, Scarborough was represented by Correa and McNeil, both families have been active in the Parish for over thirty five years.

Saint Barnabas of the first century, born Joseph, was an Early Christian convert, one of the earliest Christian disciples in Jerusalem. Like almost all Christians at the time (see also Jewish Christians), Barnabas was Jewish, specifically a Levite. Termed an apostle, he and Saint Paul undertook missionary journeys together and defended Gentile converts against the demands of stricter church leaders, see also Judaizers. They gained many converts in Antioch , traveled together making more converts , and participated in the Council of Jerusalem.  Barnabas and Paul successfully evangelized among the "God-fearing" gentiles who attended synagogues in various Hellenized cities of Anatolia.

Martyred at Salamis, Cyprus, in AD 61 , he is traditionally identified as the founder of the Cypriot Church. The feast day of St Barnabas is celebrated on June 11.

Council 3296 partners with Holy Spirit Catholic School (Scarborough)--“PSL Primary Soccer League”Council 3296 partners with Holy Spirit Catholic School (Scarborough)--“PSL Primary Soccer League”-- PSL is a house league with a difference.

This league is designed to inculcate the independence and self reliance of students while at the same time developing “collaborative contributors” to the common good. Through staff efforts, the PSL prepared junior students to coach teams, officiate games and do daily announcements about schedules and team standings.

Council 3296 is partnering with the PSL Primary Soccer League to run the Knights Soccer Penalty Kick Competition on June 17th at Holy Spirit Catholic School (Scarborough). This event will be run during school hours for maximum particpation. We now have over 100 participants registered for the soccer competition

Having the support of the Principal and Staff of the elementry schools is critical in making the Youth Programs a success.

2009 Catholic Essay Contest WinnersKnights of Columbus 2009 Catholic Essay Contest Winners.

The Knights of Columbus Council#3296, sponsored an essay contest for youth. The theme of the essay contest was “The Responsibility of the Catholic Citizen in a Free Society.” The topic to be discussed in the essay is inspired by the words of Pope John Paul II, “Above all, the common outcry, which is justly made on behalf of human rights - for example, the right to health, to home, to work, to family, to culture - is false and illusory if the right tolife, the most basic fundamental right and condition for all other personal rights, is not defended with maximum determination.”

We had terrific support from Holy Spirit C.S and I would like to thank Principal Mayer for making this happen. The attached picture has the winners of the essay contest, these were provided from our Advocate Dan McNeil. The picture includes: Erin Edghill, Christina Ashley Arayata, Joshua Lim, Chancellor Bruce Correa - Director of Youth Programs, Principal Mayer. A certificate will be awarded to all participants and a cash reward to the winners will be presented at the school graduation.

Sunday 31st. May, our council had a Magic Show at Jean Vanier High School in Collingwood for which we distributed 500 free tickets. The Magician was excellent and the kids thoughtfully enjoyed his show, unfortunately we had a poor turnout even after hand delivering the tickets to the schools in the area. Eight Knights helped with the show.
