A Lowertown resident has been honoured by the local branch of the Knights of Columbus, with a room at the nearby Notre Dame Basilica Cathedral now bearing his name.
The Robert Lafontaine Room was officially blessed and opened on the evening of Wednesday, July 29, at the church at 56 Guiges Avenue.
Terrence Prendergast, the Archbishop of Ottawa, himself a member of the Knights, presided over the proceedings.
“Let us pray that the Lord enter this place,” he said, before sprinkling the room with holy water. “May this place be a place of peace and love.” He noted further that he was proud of Lafontaine and that, like the honoree, “God has a plan for each of us and he wants to share that with all of us.”
Grand Knight Roger Richard told the assembled that the room was being reinvented to a higher calling.
“It was (formerly) a laundry room. It had machines, a press, a commercial washer, a commercial dryer,” he remembered. “It took us about two or three months to get everything out! Nothing would fit through that door,” so the machines had to be dis-assembled, piece-by-piece.
Richard noted the new Knights room was named in honour of Lafontaine because he had “spent numerous hours and hard work in this room.” After the ceremony, Lafontaine said that “I feel good about it,” and added that he was glad that Archbishop Prendergast was able to preside over the evening. He had been honoured with a watch from his fellow Knights, and “I could not make a speech,” because he was so overcome with emotion.
Un habitant de la Bas ville a été honoré par la branche locale des Chevaliers de Colomb, avec une salle à la Cathédrale de Basilique Notre Dame proche portant maintenant son nom. La Salle Robert Lafontaine a été officiellement bénie et a été ouverte sur le soir de mercredi, le 29 juillet, à l'église à 56 Avenue de Guiges. Terrence Prendergast, l'Archevêque d'Ottawa, un membre des Chevaliers, présidé sur l'événement. « Nous permettre de prier que le Seigneur entre ce lieu, » il a dit, avant asperger la salle avec l'eau sainte. « Pouvoir ce lieu est un lieu de paix et d'amour ». Il a noté plus qu'il était fier de Lafontaine et de cela, comme l'honoré, « Dieu a un projet pour on et il veut partager qu'avec nous tous ».
Le grand Chevalier Roger Richard a dit que le s'est assemblé que la salle était réinventé à un plus haut appel. « C'était (naguère) une buanderie. Il a eu des machines, une presse, une rondelle commerciale, un commercial plus sec, » il s'est rappelé. « Il nous a pris environ deux ou trois mois pour tout obtenir hors ! Rien n'ajusterait par cette porte, » si les machines ont dû sont dis-assemblé, le morceau-par-le morceau.
Richard a noté la nouvelle salle de Chevaliers a été nommée dans l'honneur de Lafontaine parce qu'il « avait dépensé des heures et le travail assidu nombreuses dans cette pièce ». Après la cérémonie, Lafontaine a dit cela « je me sens bon de lui, » et a ajouté qu'il était content que ce Prendergast d'Archevêque pouvait présider sur le soir. Il avait été honoré avec une montre de ses collègues Chevaliers, et « je ne pourrais pas prononcer un discours, » parce qu'il a été surmonté si avec l'émotion

7th ANNUAL HORSESHOE TOURNAMENT FOR MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY
On August 8, 2009, the Deputy Grand Knight, Georges Martin, presented a cheque for $500.00 to Jean-Jacques Chartrand, the organizer of the tournament. 60 players were registered for the tournament. This annual event was very successful and $2000.00 was donated to MS Ottawa Chapter.

8 août 2009, le Député Grand Chevalier, Georges Martin, présente un chèque de 500$ à Jean-Jacques Chartrand, responsable du tournoi. 60 joueurs ont participés et l'évènement annuel a permis de contribuer 2000$ au fond de la Dystrophie Musculaire Chapitre d'Ottawa.
